MASTER OF MUSIC

Music Theory
The Master of Music 'Music Theory' degree programme at the University of Music 中国足球彩票 is contextually based upon three equally weighted pillars.

  • The first pillar is the ability to carry out academic analysis in the field of music theory under application of historical and systematic methods and also critically pursue further development of such systems. Coupled to this is the ability to contribute to specialist academic discourse in written (articles, essays, books), verbal (presentations, seminars etc.) or other forms (e.g. using digital media). Alongside study in the major subject, this ability is likewise acquired through music analysis and courses, culminating in the intensively mentored master thesis.
  • The second pillar involves the ability to compose in various styles in consideration of the respective historical/aesthetic norms; firstly as an instrument of insight within the meaning of 'experimental archaeology', secondly as a component of independent artistic expression, for example, in the area of applied composition, and thirdly as a facility for musical reconstruction, re-composition and adaptation. This ability is specifically imparted during the study of the major subject and the associated projects.
  • The third pillar is concerned with the pedagogical ability of teaching music theory as a tutor or teacher – from a novice to an academic level. Furthermore, also the ability to engage an interested public with music theory content in the form of concert presentations, radio features, background pieces in programmes, articles etc. This ability is specifically acquired in didactic events and teaching projects (e.g. 'hosted concerts' in the theory classes).

Indispensable factors in terms of professionalisation in all three of the above-stated qualification areas are the accompanying intensive training in aural recognition (melodic, rhythmic, harmonious, tonal and intonation aural analysis, audiation training, aural impression textualisation skills etc.) as well as the development of a well-versed piano technique. All these skills are acquired in the commensurate courses.
